New to Calgary? Tips to Get to Know the City

Moving to a new city is a big undertaking and feeling comfortable, understandably, takes a little time. If you’re like most people, you’ve already moved more than once. And, you probably have a few ways to settle in your new home that have worked for you in the past. Nevertheless, there are always other ideas to consider. Here are some top tips for getting to know Calgary quickly.

Check out online information

Start with the City of Calgary website. Here you can find all sorts of information - including social programs and services, transportation, bylaws, parks and recreation, taxes and more.

Join a club

There are so many options when it comes to participating in a club. Maybe you’re looking for a service club where you can start making a difference for fellow Calgarians. Perhaps you’d prefer something sports or activity-based such as tennis, golf, gardening, books, etc. Finding the right group of like-minded individuals is a quick way to feel like you belong to your new home.

Find a faith community

If you were part of a faith community where you previously lived, you may already know which place of worship you plan to attend in your new city. This is certainly one way to quickly feel welcomed and acclimatized to Calgary.

Visit the library

The Calgary City Library has a wealth of free services for members. These incorporate resources and programs for all ages. Would you believe that the Calgary Library is the second most used system in the country? The 21 branch locations across the city are great places to make connections with others.

Sign up for a class

The choices are endless - from free classes at the library to university and college courses to those sponsored by various clubs, organizations and individual instructors. Classes are a terrific short-term way to find new interests and fast friends.

Attend events

Like any large metropolitan area, Calgary has its share of special events and entertainment. In addition to looking through local newspapers, you can find several online sites that feature activities. Here’s one supported by Tourism Calgary.

Volunteer

Volunteering provides a wonderful way to meet people in your community. Basically, that’s because you’re working closely with others towards a common goal. Look into volunteering for the parent council at your children’s school, assisting to stock shelves at the food bank or something else.

Ask around

If you have questions about Calgary, ask around. You’re sure to find more than a few helpful Calgarians eager to share what they know about the city and suggest where to go for different services or weekend activities. Whether its coworkers, your child’s teacher, neighbours or another friendly face, reaching out to others for information is always a great idea.

Invite your neighbours over

Once you’ve unpacked and met a few of your new neighbours, extend an invitation for coffee or a meal. You could ask several nearby families over for a pot luck lunch or hold a holiday open house for people on the block that you’d like to get to know better. Instead of waiting for others to invite you over, turning the tables with your own invitation can quickly lead to friendships.

Get out and explore

One of the best ways to get to know the city is to just get out there and explore. Before long, you’ll find a favourite cycling path with your children or a convenient off-leash dog park for your best friend. What’s more, you’re making marvelous memories of moving to Calgary.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my suggestions. Remember, it takes time to settle in a new city but with a little effort you’ll be feeling right at home before long!
